Choosing the Right Material for Bag Making
Types of Materials
When making a bag, you have many materials to choose from. Here are some popular options:
- Fabrics: Natural materials like cotton, linen and even hessian are easy to work with and durable enough for most bag styles.
- Leather: Genuine leather, faux leather, and suede are stylish and durable. THese fabrics tend to be hard to work with, particularly for beginners. However, they might be worth the effort if you have a particular look in mind.
- Synthetic Materials: polyester, poly-cotton, nylon and even vinyl can be used to make bags. Sythentic materials are typically cheaper than natural fabrics but can be more difficult to sew. Look for fabrics with little stretch if you opt for synthetic.
- Eco-Friendly Options: Recycled materials are great for handmade bags. Recycled materials can be bought or used from old pieces of clothing, bedding and home furnishings. Consider using recycled fabrics for sewing practice as you work on your bag!
Factors to Consider
When choosing a material, think about these factors:
- Durability: Your bag should last a long time.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Choose a fabric with a print or colour you like.
- Ease of Sewing: Some materials are easier to work with than others.
- Cost: Pick a material that fits your budget.
- Purpose: Think about what you will use the bag for.
